Yves Engler’s fight to lead a revival of Canada’s remnant left; Dan Kovalik and the Hague Group filling the justice gap for Palestine in the second half.
Chris, can I rcommend that you stop using the terms "Left" & "Right" as they have lost thier meaning. The term "Far Right" is "inflamitory" as it includes many people are best described as working class. Thier views however reactionary, (and sometimes repugnant) are a result of powerlessness for the most part. Many of the people categorized as "Far Right" would likely be allies of the Left, if the Left were addressing thier core issues, and as such you should be seeking common ground with them.
James Corpett has suggest the terms "Up" & "Down" as an alternative as it redefines the narrative in terms of "Class". Almost all of the crimes of the last 100 years have been committed by "Up" and those members of "Down" who have been involved are best described either as "Useful Idiots" or opportunists who are doing "Ups" dirty work.
People like Yves would be supported by more people if he spoke in these terms, because many of the poor & working class value family, religion, indepence, and community and percieve the "Left" as being against them. They percieve the "Left" as judging them for thier values, and wanting to tell them how to live thier lives. Most of these individuals want to do what they do (grow peaches) and be left alone.
Yes, it's perhaps intellectually lazy to use these terms - though the idea of "Upwingers" precedes Corbett by some long stretch, appearing first to my knowledge in Robert Anton Wilson's 'Prometheus Rising' - 1983 New Falcon Publishing . As far as the "far-right" reference; I believe I was referring to the Colombian death squads preceding Petro's presidency, (and still a powerful force in that country). I'm not too concerned about injuring they or their supports' sensibilities. ;)
You might be referring to Death Squads, but the term is used by the left to smear a broad swath of society, basically anyone they don't like for any reason. A very obvious example would be Tucker Carlson. May be you don't like his position on some issues, but he is antiwar. He agrees with you on Isreal Palistine, he is anti the war in Ukraine, etc. In other words, he is someone that you as a traditional leftist agree with on many issues, even though there are some issues that you have strong disagreement.
The Traditional Left needs to find ways to work with the Traditional Right to be successful, and smears such as "Far Right" are not useful in that respect.
"Traditional Left"? Can we be consistent? Yes, the "left-right" paradigm is shambolic; always was problematic. It's used to divide the polity, and get them fighting with each other rather than addressing society's real and larger problems. In this instance, I was definitively referring to a specific group, as I said. There's nothing maybe about it. There is no smear. Let's not erase history in the service of the latest semantic understanding.
My point is that you & Yves have a lot in common with people on the right at the level of values. Many of the working poor, and middle class have been smeared by terms such as "Far Right" by people like Naheed Nenshi many times, so when they hear terms like that they shut down.
Yves needs to be building bridges & finding common ground with these people to be successful as given a voice with integrity on they left they would be with him.
