The Trump administration's belligerent trade stance has had serious effects on Canada. Since his return to power in January, the US president's repeated call for annexing its northern neighbour has forced an early exit for long-time prime minister, Justin Trudeau and made dealing with threatened American tariffs the core issue of the looming April election. It's cold comfort - not least to Trudeau - that Canada is not alone in Trump's hot seat. Both Denmark and Panama have had their sovereignty challenged, while Mexico also faces steep tariffs on goods and services it trades into the US.
Primary among Trump's Canadian trade targets is the auto industry, protected by the decades-old Canada-U.S. Auto Pact, signed during the Johnson administration, and subsequent agreements.
